There’s a reason cardamom sits at the heart of bot There’s a reason cardamom sits at the heart of both the spice cabinet and the apothecary. Elettaria cardamomum has been valued for thousands of years, from Ayurvedic medicine to Egyptian incense to the pastries of Scandinavia. The seed pods, dried and distilled, yield an oil that’s spicy, warm, and a little penetrating, with a scent that lingers in the best way.
Its history runs deep. Dioscorides, Theophrastus, and Pliny all wrote about cardamom in antiquity, usually paired with pepper, clove, and nutmeg. The essential oil itself was first distilled as early as 1540. Modern research is catching up to what these traditions already knew, with studies pointing to anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and antimicrobial activity.
Aromatically, it blends beautifully with ginger, black pepper, cinnamon leaf, eucalyptus species, sweet fennel, conifer eos, and rose, making it a natural addition to a warming winter blend, respiratory support, or a grounding aphrodisiac synergy.
A small note on safety: cardamom is fairly high in 1,8 cineole, so it’s best kept away from the face and nose of young children, and blended down thoughtfully in any formula meant for little ones.
What’s your favorite way to use cardamom? 🫚✨
Meet Quentin Olagne, a graduate of The School for Meet Quentin Olagne, a graduate of The School for Aromatic Studies and founder of Aroma Compass 🌿
Quentin’s path into aromatherapy started in an unexpected place: cybersecurity and complex systems analysis. He brings that same careful, evidence based mindset to plants, taking time to understand each oil’s chemistry and context before ever making a recommendation.
🌻
As Quentin puts it: “I believe aromatherapists are a bridge between the plant, the producer, and the person seeking support.”
🌻
We love seeing where our graduates take their training. Congratulations, Quentin!

A couple of you reached out recently to check in o A couple of you reached out recently to check in on @aromaticstudies — wondering if everything was okay, why things had gone quiet. Thank you for that. It’s a good feeling, knowing people notice. 💚
We’re here. Just slower.
After a month away at a health retreat, I’ve been easing back into daily life with a different pace. Less urgency. More time in the garden, which this time of year means watching the perennials push up through the soil, clearing beds, making space for what’s coming. There’s something grounding about that kind of work — it asks nothing of you except your attention.
🌻 I’ve also been sitting with some honest questions about social media. It can be a genuinely useful thing for a small business, and I do value being able to stay connected with people who care about aromatics and what we’re building at the school. But I’d be less than honest if I didn’t acknowledge the other side of it — how much energy it pulls from your day, how easy it is to confuse posting with actually saying something, how rarely any of it adds real value to the lived experience of the person scrolling through it.
🌻
So for now, we’re being more selective. Showing up when there’s something worth saying.
🌻If you’d like to stay in touch in a quieter, more intentional way, the link in our bio will take you to our newsletter. 💚
