It’s the season of giving and time to consider what we will offer our loved ones this holiday season. There are so many gift options out there—especially in the realm of aromatherapy and botanical body care. Making your own aromatic gifts is not only a beautiful expression of love, but easier on your wallet, and the environment!
Some of my favorite gifts to make around the holidays are roll ons, body oils, and bath salts. Here, I will share my recipes for this season.
The fall and winter months heighten feelings of warmth and gratitude, and I love to nurture those feelings with aromatic products. I am reminded of what it means to feel and share warmth, to experience joy, and to take time to rest, and breathe. I have several essential oils that are my go-to’s this time of year.
Oils for Warmth (both feeling and sharing)
Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum) assists in opening the airways, acts as an expectorant, offers relief for indigestion, and clears the mind.
Black Pepper (Piper nigrum) helps soothe muscular aches and pains, stimulates circulation throughout the body, and increases stamina.
Pink Peppercorn (Schinus molle L.) offers stimulating effects to the mind and body. It encourages alertness and increases stamina. This evergreen plant is unrelated to Piper nigrum.
Virginia Cedarwood (Juniperus virginiana) supports lymph movement, relieves muscular tension, and offers uplifting and cleansing energy to the psyche.
Sandalwood (Santalum album) is centering and brings balance to the nervous system. It helps us to evoke compassion and relieves anxiety. It’s also moistening and assists in dry skin conditions. Though energetically cooling, Sandalwood is grounding and soothing, so still a good winter oil.
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) encourages circulation throughout the body, increases libido, relieves aches and pains, offers relief of common cold symptoms, and directs focus and clarity.
Joy brings to mind all of the citrus oils. Consider Lemon, Sweet Orange, Pink Grapefruit, and Bergamot. These are my favorite go-to’s when I need to be reminded of the joy within and express it in my life.
Lemon (Citrus limon) is cleansing – not only for the mind and body but also of our physical spaces. It encourages lymph movement, assists in digestion, brings clarity to the mind and increases our ability to communicate clearly.
Sweet Orange (Citrus sinensis) cleanses the mind and body, and is a wonderful air purifier. Sweet Orange can ease digestive discomfort, and offers a calming yet uplifting effect to the nervous system.
Pink Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) is a lovely air purifier, encourages circulation, eases digestive discomfort, encourages lymph movement, helps to relieve muscular aches and pains, and offers emotional uplift.
Bergamot-BF (bergaptene-free) (Citrus aurantium ssp. bergamia) relieves stress-related digestive issues, stabilizes mood, eases anxiety and depression, and offers support to the female reproductive system.
Breathe in the Season!
I am very particular about the essential oils I like to use for encouragement to breathe deeply. Personally, I love a good earthy or cooling aroma. Some favorites include Black Spruce, Douglas Fir, Cypress, Cedar Leaf, Peppermint, and Spearmint.
Black Spruce (Picea mariana) offers support to weakened immune systems, is especially supportive for individuals experiencing adrenal fatigue, and eases muscular aches and pains.
Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) is wonderful for energetically clearing the mind and body as well as physical space, offers support to the respiratory system, and eases mental and emotional fatigue.
Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens) calms and clears the mind and brings relief to the respiratory system.
Cedar Leaf (Thuja occidentalis) acts as a wound healer, and cleanses the mind and body.
Peppermint (Mentha x piperita) encourages circulation, helps tight muscles to relax, eases stomach discomfort, and brings relief to mental fatigue.
Spearmint (Mentha spicata) helps relieve headaches and cold symptoms, as well as general brain fog.
