How to make an Aromatherapy Inhaler

I love inhaler tubes. Easy to make and easy to use. Since its Autumn (vata season), I focused on creating an inhaler for anxiety but it is an equally awesome time to create one to support the respiratory system and immunity as well. Sample blends are below.

To make an inhaler, you will need:

  • Blank inhaler tube


  • Choice of essential oils: each tube can have anywhere from 25-35 drops of essential oil or an eo synergy
  • A small bowl
  • Tweezers to place cotton pad into bowl and move pad around then to place pad into tube
  • Certified Organic Cotton Pads (either square or circle pads, cut down to size for tube)*

(*Note: I have a thing about cotton. It is considered a ‘dirty’ crop as it is heavily sprayed with pesticides hence I don’t recommend using the cotton pad that comes with inhaler tubes. Why use something with a possible pesticide residue to put up your nose? You can purchase certified organic cotton pads to replace them. Simply cut down to size and it works just as well.)

Steps to Make:

Step 1:  Place drops of each essential oils into bowl. For the Soothe Anxiety Inhaler, I used:

  • 10 drops Roman chamomile
  • 14 drops Ylang ylang
  • 4 drops Neroli
  • 1 drop Vetiver

Step 2: Swirl the bowl around to combine essential oils.

Step 3: Place cotton pad into bowl (either with fingers or tweezers). Move cotton pad around until ‘saturated’ with the essential oil synergy.

Step 4: Place ‘saturated’ cotton pad into inhaler tube.

Step 5: Place bottom cap (sometimes called the ‘butt’) onto the tube.

Step 6: Place cap/lid onto top of tube to enclose inhaler.


Step 7: Be sure to label aromatherapy inhaler with ingredients and name of product.

Step 8: Inhaler tube is now ready for use. Can be used as needed or desired throughout the day. Simply remove top lid/cap and hold approx. 1 inch away from nose (can be closer or farther depending on sense of smell) and inhale deeply. For anxiety inhaler, it is wonderful to close ones eyes while smelling and imagine a calmness soothing ones spirit and mind.

Breathing Space

  • 12 drops Eucalyptus radiata
  • 10 drops Rosemary ct. cineole (Rosmarinus officinalis ct. cineole)
  • 7 drops Bay Laurel (Laurus nobilis)

Keeping Sinusitis Away

  • 5 drops Niaouli.MQV  (Melaleuca quinquenervia)
  • 10 drops Lemon (Citrus limon)
  • 10 drops Rosemary ct. cineole  (Rosmarinus officinalis ct. cineole)
  • 3 drops Tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia)

Flu season

  • 7 drops Scotch Pine (Pinus sylvestris)
  • 10 drops Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menzies)
  • 12 drops Eucalyptus radiata
