Cedrus atlantica
Cedrus atlantica is one of the true cedars and is a native of the Atlas Mountains in Algeria and Morocco. Cedarwood is a member of the Pinaceae family, which includes fir, hemlock, spruce, and pine species.
The essential oil of Atlas Cedarwood is distilled from the wood or saw shavings/sawdust.
Cedarwood essential oil has an affinity to: the skin, the musculoskeletal system, the respiratory system, the urinary system, and, of course, the mind/emotions. Cedarwood essential oil is also one of my go-to essential oils for mosquito repellents and for linen sprays to get rid of dust mites.
Is Cedarwood essential oil safe?
Yes! Cedarwood essential oil has no known contraindications. Atlas Cedarwood essential oil is rich in sesquiterpenes (α-himachelene & β-himachalene) supported by non-toxic ketones.

Cedarwood Essential Oil and the Skin
Cedarwood essential oil is one of my favorite essential oils when I am working with adolescents going through puberty. During puberty so many things are happening in the persons life and Cedarwood not only helps to ground and provide core strength but is also beneficial when creating aromatherapy products for oily skin and acne.
Acne Cleanser with Cedarwood
- 2 ounces Dr. Bronners Baby Castile Soap
- 2 tsp. Witch hazel hydrosol
- 10 drops Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica)
- 5 drops Lemon (Citrus limon)
- 10 drops Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens)
How to make: Combine castile soap and witch hazel hydrosol into a 2 ounce amber or blue cobalt bottle. Add in essential oils. Place cap on bottle and shake vigorously. Wipe outside of bottle with rubbing alcohol and place label on bottle. Use 1 – 2x daily to cleanse face. Be sure to apply a cream after cleansing!
Cedarwood Essential Oil and Muscular Pain
Cedarwood essential oil is an effective remedy for muscular aches and pains due to its analgesic or pain relieving activity. Cedarwood essential oil is also beneficial for reducing muscular tension brought on by stress or, from what so many of us do each day, sitting at a computer!
Relieve Tension Massage Oil
- 2 ounces Sesame oil (or other vegetable oil)
- 10 drops Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica)
- 7 drops Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens)
- 8 drops Ylang ylang (Cananga odorata)
- 6 drops Sweet orange (Citrus sinensis)
Combine essential oils into a 2 ounce amber or blue cobalt bottle. Add in vegetable oil of choice. Place cap on bottle and shake vigorously. Wipe outside of bottle with rubbing alcohol and place label on bottle. Use as needed. Apply to neck, shoulders, and other tense areas of the body.
Cedarwood Essential Oil and Emotions
As a wood essential oil, Cedarwood is indicated for: flightiness, instability, lacking foundation to stand on, anxiety, feelings of being overwhelmed, need to go inward, feelings of being scattered, weak ‘constitution’, vata imbalance, emotional emptiness, lack of imagination, anguish, nervousness, feelings of being disconnected to life, frazzled nerves, envy, compulsiveness, panic attacks, sensitivity, irritability, and worry.
Relieve Anxiety Inhaler
Cedarwood + Ginger + Ylang Ylang
- 1 blank inhaler tube
Organic cotton cosmetic pad cut to size needed - 10 drops Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica)
- 7 drops Ginger (Zingiber officinale)
- 6 drops Ylang ylang (Cananga odorata)

Linen Spray for Dust Mites
- 4 ounce spritzer bottle
- Distilled water
- 25 drops Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica)
- 21 drops Lemon (Citrus limon)
- 14 drops Patchouli (Pogostemom cablin)
How to make: Fill 4 ounce bottle with distilled water. Add essential oils into the water. Place cap on lid and shake vigorously for a minute or two. The linen spray is now ready to use. Be sure to label! Spray on mattress or other furniture as needed.
Cedar Beard Oil
- 1 ounce Jojoba
- 1 ounce Calendula herbal oil (Calendula officinalis)
- 12 drops Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica)
- 12 drops Frankincense (Boswellia carteri)
- 6 drops Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
How to make: Fill 2 ounce bottle with jojoba oil and calendula oil. Add essential oils into the oil. Place cap on lid and shake vigorously for a minute or two. The beard oil is now ready to use. Be sure to label!
