Here in NYC, as we jump from the days of trekking around in the bitter cold with layered clothing into days where we can’t take enough clothes off, a question I am often asked is “What are your plans for summer?” At this time of year, we are all thinking about escaping the city heat. At least for a brief stint. Personally, I have a love-hate relationship with this city in the summer. I’ve lived in Brooklyn my whole life, but if I were ever to relocate, being reasonable distance to a beach would be non-negotiable.
On the other hand, when the heat waves do break, there is no way to describe a cool summer night in New York. For the majority of the summer, though, the reality is repressive heat steaming up from the pavement, which makes me dream of summer getaways. These trips tend to be short, as I always have something “on the burner” to get back to, so I focus on keeping my travel bag light. With Memorial Day weekend coming up and the official start of summer in mid-June, I’d like to share an essential oil blend and a few self-care recipes that pack a lot of utility and streamline your regimen.
Summer Getaway Utility Blend
- 18 drops Cedarwood (Juniperus virginiana) – I love this oil’s ability to balance the skin. For a men’s grooming product, it’s a very cool fragrance. It’s also great for the immune system, soothing to the central nervous system, and an excellent insect repellant to boot.
- 1 drop Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens) – Geranium essential oil has a great affinity for the skin. It’s a perfect choice for signs of aging, scars, and sunburns. It is also a natural deodorant and insect repellant (picking up on my theme yet?)
- 2 drops Ginger (Zingiber officinale) – Boasting therapeutic properties of being anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial, I simply love the way ginger sits at the top of a blend. A good fresh ginger essential oil usually has a sparkle with fresh notes of spice and citrus bringing power to revive and relieve the mind and upper respiratory system.
Recipe 1: Deodorant / Cologne Splash / Bug Repellent
Combine 3 tsp. of distilled water, 1 tsp. vegetable glycerin, 1 tsp. aloe gel, 1 tsp. witch hazel. Add ½ tsp. Summer Getaway Utility Blend. Transfer contents into a fine spritz bottle and you’re set!
Recipe 2: Face + Body Moisture Serum / Aftershave / Sunburn Relief Gel
Pour 1 tsp. of Aloe vera gel in a bowl. While mixing, sprinkle in pinches of xanthan gum until the mixture takes on a soft jello-like consistency. Keep mixing and add 1 tsp. of jojoba oil and 2 TBS. of distilled water or cold tea (lavender, chamomile or rose hip). If you went overboard with the xanthan gum it’s fine to add more water or tea. Transfer contents into a 2 oz. Boston round bottle add about 15 drops of Summer Getaway Utility Blend. Shake well before each use.
Enjoy your trip!
