What is Tallow?
Tallow is rendered animal fat derived from beef, specifically from grass-fed cattle. Dating back centuries, tallow was the original non-toxic moisturizer, used by ancient civilizations as a natural way to protect and hydrate their skin. The process of creating tallow involves heating animal fat tissues to separate the pure fat from other components, resulting in a solid, waxy substance at room temperature.

It has a unique ability to preserve the effectiveness of more delicate ingredients such as antioxidants by helping to protect them from light and oxygen degradation.
Oleic acid has everything you need to see amazing results when applied topically. With high levels of monounsaturated fatty acids, it’s more shelf stable than other ingredients that are higher in polyunsaturated fatty acids. Tallow also contains conjugated linoleic acid at levels between 2-5%, which is often referred to as one of the essential fatty acids. Additionally, the moisturizing properties of Engkabang fat esters, which are derived primarily from tallow, showed increased skin hydration.

Here’s something that doesn’t get talked about enough: how tallow is processed dramatically affects what you end up with. The research shows pretty clearly that low-temperature rendering produces superior results compared to high-heat methods (Limmatvapirat et al., 2021).

Samples processed using microwave methods showed more yellow coloration, which typically indicates unwanted chemical changes.
