Manifest change with these Aromatic Rituals for the Total Solar Eclipse
For those who live in the United States, the upcoming total solar eclipse has garnered much media attention. But, for those unfamiliar with the happenings of our sun, moon, and planets, the science behind this once-and-a-lifetime event can easily bog you down. Simply put, a total solar eclipse occurs when the moon moves directly in-between Earth and the sun, blocking out the light. Rest assured that this is one event you don’t want to miss—after all, it’s the first one visible on the mainland U.S. in 38 years!
On Monday August 21, 2017, the moon will completely obstruct the sun for a stretch of land from Oregon to South Carolina. Viewers in other parts of the country will experience a near full eclipse that is sure to be equally as chilling and breathtaking. But, in order to fully witness the solar eclipse, you must be geographically located in its “path of totality” that will arc across the continental United States from west to east.
This eclipse in Leo has the potential to deeply impact one’s life. Historically, eclipses represent time periods of salient transformation. Solar eclipses inform us that something essential in our lives has come to an end and we are then ushered into a space to focus on something new. And beyond the total eclipse, that night will also bring a new moon in Leo— the second of this year! A coinciding new moon and eclipse is sure to catalyze change on both the personal and societal level.
Tap into this total eclipse’s transformational energy with these four aromatic rituals that will help you stay grounded and manifest abundance and positive change.
1. Be Fully Present
The eclipse is a highly-touted event, but it won’t last for long! Just two minutes and 40 seconds maximum, to be exact. With Leo being an astrological fire sign, it’s rather fitting to turn to cooling oils— chemically comprised of oxides that are sure to snap your awareness into the present moment and really soak in this monumental event. Plus, there won’t be another one visible from North America until 2024.
Make yourself an energizing, yet mellowing aromatic inhaler. Cape chamomile has an apple-like aroma that promotes calm without sluggishness. And cajeput, a gentle cousin of tea tree, is high in oxide and monoterpene content—making it an incredibly stimulating oil that has an affinity for the respiratory system. Lastly, grapefruit is a cheerfully uplifting citrus that rounds out this mindful blend.
How-To: Add 15 drops grapefruit, 10 drops cape chamomile, 5 drops cajeput onto a cotton wick of an aromatic inhaler. Secure and use before and during the eclipse!
2. Stay Grounded
Eclipses bring on electric energy that can leave some feeling scattered and uncertain. While everyone differs in how this transformational energy shakes things up, some feelings that you’ve been sweeping under the rug may rise to the surface. Stay grounded while sitting with your emotions! What better way to do that than deepen your self-care and use a salt scrub to slough off the old to make room for the new?
Black spruce is a centering oil distilled from the needles of the majestic tree. Morphologically speaking, the deeply rooted tree continually grows always offering a new viewpoint. From a Jungian perspective, spruce may help us befriend our shadow and remove psychological blocks impeding us from tapping into our best self. Additionally, a hint of earthy vetiver blends nicely with the spruce and can support creative endeavors. Lastly, red mandarin offers a pop of summer citrus while supporting the root chakra.
How-To: In a one ounce glass jar, add 13 drops black spruce, 2 drops vetiver, and 15 drops red mandarin. Let the blend synergize before topping off the jar with fine sea salt and a dollop of jojoba (experiment to find a consistency you like). Gently use on limbs in shower before cleansing.
3. Gain Clarity on Changes of Heart and Mind
In this astrologically trying time, grant yourself permission to just be and welcome change. This solar eclipse can mobilize inner work for outer change. While answers may not be immediately clear, you must create space in order to assess your goals and direction. A roller bottle with a comforting, fresh aroma may help you come to realizations about your path.
In this synergy blend, the oils have significance beyond their therapeutic benefit—working at the energetic level. For instance, ginger has been historically used to attract abundance, passion, and success. It is also a go-to oil for speeding things up while also helping you stay rooted in the realm of possibilities. Lemongrass is renowned for its cleansing properties— allowing one to bust through blockages and move forward in life with grace and integrity. And rosemary rounds out the blend because the herbaceous aroma aids the physical body by fostering mental clarity.
How-To: Add 12 drops ginger, 7 drops lemongrass, and 11 drops rosemary ct. verbenone into a glass roller bottle. Top off the blend with carrier oil of your choice. Apply on pulse points and smell.
4. Embrace Duality
During a solar eclipse, the feminine moon blocks the patriarchal sun signifying the coming of a major shift in the collective consciousness. Eclipses help us tap into our understanding of light and dark, not only literally, but also figuratively. As we usher in what’s sure to be a new age of conscious leadership and a re-balancing of power, we must come to embrace our truth, while simultaneously honoring and recognizing the truth of others. Given all that’s recently transpired across the globe—be it violence, anthropogenic weather events, and more— many will be tuning into this event hoping to harness the feminine energy for the greater good of humanity.
From an aromatic standpoint, it is fitting to work with both yin and yang oils. Typically, yin is associated with the moon and characterized as feminine, cool, and receptive. Conversely, yang is associated with masculine elements, like summer and sun. So, to embrace the historic occasion where these elements will shortly be in harmony, make your own nourishing body oil with yin oils, lavender and cedarwood, and yang oils, juniper and patchouli.
How-To: Add 10 drops lavender, 4 drops cedarwood, 9 drops juniper, and 7 drops patchouli into a 1 oz. glass bottle or jar. Use on body après washing in the shower or bath.
